Barun Valley

Barun Valley is a hidden Himalayan valley situated entirely inside the Makalu Barun National Park located at the base of Mt. Makalu in Sankhuwasabha district of eastern Nepal. This valley is one of the least developed places in Nepal which was created by the Barun River which becomes glacier in the winter time. The valley is originally inhabited by Yakkha and Limbu hundreds of years ago. Trek to Barun Valley presents wonderful contrasts of high waterfalls cascading into deep gorges, snow peak, and lush green forests with beautiful colorful flowers. This area also features rare species of plants and animals growing in various climates and habitats. Real exploration of these activities which are undisturbed by human being seems to be purely natural and hence giving the feeling of cinematography in real sense.

Mt. Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world and this journey lead you the feeling of exploring one of the world’s highlighted destination. Barun valley trek can be started from Chichila, which is located about 3 hours of drive from Tumlingtar. The trail passes through Barun River valley situated in Makalu Barun National Park. This trek is really considered to be adventurous and thrilling as the trails pass through high passes including Shipton La and Keke La with beautiful lakes like Kalopokhari. However, most of the trail to Barun valley lacks the human settlements or uninhabited and requires tent camping. This also somehow provides a unique experience of staying and sleeping outside under the shadow of the Himalayas in unexploited nature. While you are Barun valley, you can figure out the place rich in biodiversity. Various species, including rare and endangered one, of plants and animals, can be found here while are existing in purely natural environment freely and it is really enjoyable to watch them.

However, Barun Valley trek provides you the great opportunity of walking from the lowlands of Tumlingtar on the Arun River to one of the highest Base Camps the Makalu Base Camp at 5,000m above sea level. You can yourself feel every change like climate, sceneries and many more during this trek. This trek is favorable to make the journey on during the autumn season.
