Mt. Abi is one of the high peaks in Mahalangur range of Khumbu Region, situated at the elevation of 6,097 meters above sea level. The peak is group ‘A’ categorized climbing peak by Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and is considered as one of the classic trekking peaks in Gokyo valley of Nepal. It is one of the very rarely climbed peaks, less than 6 times, which has been permitted for climbing since 2002. The peak is technically difficult to climb because of being challenging ridges towards the peak and requires ice climbing, as being situated in higher elevation.
However, Mt. Api is seen to be spread out into two identical peaks, seems like a pyramid, regarded as Kangchung twins which are separately known as Kangchung peak (6,103 meters) and Cholo peak (6,089 meters). Those peaks can be climbed separately and equally, leads you to an adventurous journey. In addition, climbing Kangchung peak is challenging as its climbers should face icefall as well as wind, snow and steep path in the best season of climbing too. In contrast, Cholo peak is much easier to climb, requiring ropes and axe works with the snowy trail leading you to the summit of the peak.
Trekking Route
As usual journey towards Khumbu Region, your Abi Peak Climbing trip also starts with a flight to Lukla from Kathmandu valley. From Lukla valley, you will be trekking passing through Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Dole, Machhermo, Gokyo, Gokyo Ri, Thangna, Abi Base Camp, Abi High Camp and finally the summit of the peak. The descending trail from the summit of the peak follows downward trek to Base Camp and further towards Zongla, Pheriche, Tyangboche, Lobuche, Dingboche, Namche Bazaar and finally Lukla again. From Lukla airport, a comforting flight will take you back to Kathmandu valley.
Conclusion
Moreover, the major highlights of Abi Peak Trek include exploring around the unfrequented virgin peak and hence climbing, passing through few high passes, enjoying the scenic as well as mountain views and steeping into 6,097 meters elevation into one of the mystical worlds of Himalayas.
