Chitwan National Park is one the most famous and fist national park in Nepal. It was established in 1973 and granted the status of a world heritage site in 1984. It has an area of 932 sq. km and is located in subtropical inner terai lowalands of south central Nepal in the districts of Nawalparasi, Parsa, Chitwan and Makwanpur. In altitude it ranges from about 100m (330ft) in the river valleys to 815 m in the churia hills.
It has for some time been one of the nation’s fortunes – an awesome natural life asylum. The name ‘Chitwan” implies ‘ Heart of the Jungle’ and is the home of the imperiled Royal Bengal tiger, the Indian one-horn rhino, sloth bear, langur monkeys, wild hog, panthers, wilderness felines, different kinds of deer and more than 400 species of bright feathered birds.

More than 400 birds species, either as permanent residents or migratory visitors, can be seen by walking in the wilderness and open field while on feathered creature watching and strolling visits there as a piece of Chitwan experience trip.

We were in a canoe and then went for a jungle walk. I was scared knowing what animals were ‘out there’ and when the guide told us that in December two women (locals…no mention on Google of this!) were gored by the local ‘bull’ elephant! Not reassuring at all. I actually wanted to get out of the jungle asap!
Amazingly, we saw a rhino right next to the water and walking along and then again in the jungle…where the guide didn’t know what animal it was till it almost charged us (no kidding…we had to hide behind a tree and not move…the guide ripped my son’s red hat off at breakneck speed and was freaking out big time). After 20 minutes of trying to be invisible we backed away…there were actually two rhinos there – male and female. So, we had a very very close encounter with rhinos….an experience we will remember forever.
We didn’t ride the elephants due to the cruelty aspect.
Chitwan is amazing!!! We are so glad we visited.
Loved the elephant safari. I know how a lot of people feel about elephant rides, but these elephants are well looked after, treated very well, fed regularly, only do 2 trips in the morning and 2 in the evening and they are very happy. During this safari we saw rhinos really up close, it was so exciting! Strongly recommend this activity whilst in chitwan.
it was a great experience , but we couldn’t see any animals as they were all hiding. I recommend that you do this by elephant not Jeep so you can be through the jungle and between all animals.
The Safari guide I had was Hemanta. He was extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of Chitwan National Park, people, animals, birds, plants, trees, eco system you name it Hemanta had the answer. He took me on hikes and showed me fascinating quirks of nature along the way. He knows the best areas depending on the time of day to see animals. Nothing is too much trouble for Hemanta to make sure guests are safe, comfortable and happy. I stayed at the Rhino Residency Resort and Hemanta was assigned to look after me. He did his job to the utmost. I will never forget my Jungle journey thanks to Hemanta.
