Bageshwori Temple

Bageshwori Temple is one of the religiously important as well as significant temple dedicated to goddess Bageshwori (Durga) located in Nepalgunj, western part of Nepal. The temple area also has got another temple of Lord Shiva with mustache which is one of the only two such temples in Nepal. It is believed to have been built after a group of yogis resting here on their way to Lord Pashupatinath in Kathmandu dreamt of Sati Devi telling them that it was here that her tongue fell off and that it could be found inside a pit close by. The next day the yogis found the tongue of the goddess just as she’d described it, and later a temple was built in her honor.

There are several other small temples inside the temple area with their own significance including a temple of Lord Buddha, statue of Lord Ganesha and the temple of Lord Hanuman. There is a pond inside the area of temple namely Bageshwori pond and the temple of Lord Shiva with mustache lies at the center of it which is famous among devotees. The image of this temple can also be seen in one-rupee coins and postal stamps of Nepal.

The temple is known to be the oldest temple in that region and attracts numerous devotees from Nepal as well as neighboring country India. The temple encounters large number of devotees and receives huge crowd of people wishing to pray the goddess and offer animal sacrifices especially in the festival of Dashain. Likewise, the temple also gets crowded in the festivals like Shiva Ratri, Teej and Magh Sukla Purnima.

However, the temple is rich from its religious significance and considered as pilgrimage site for the people of Hinduism.
