Bagalamukhi Temple

Bagalamukhi Temple (बगलामुखी) is one of the most famous and significant Hindu temple located in Patan, near Kathmandu valley. This temple is dedicated to goddess Bagalamukhi (goddess from Dasamahavidhya of Kathmandu valley), who is also believed to have appeared after the people of the locality prayed to her to save them from a demon (named as Bagala) who was continuously suffering upon them. After this incident, people becoming thankful to the goddess built this temple in her honor and began to worship her. The temple features many other small temples in the temple premises and especially gets much crowded on each Thursday, which is considered as the day of goddess Bhagwati.

The main temple is relatively small but the surrounding area of the temple is large and wide enough consisting small temples of various gods and goddesses including Lord Shiva, Lord Manakamana and Ganesh. Furthermore, there is one pond inside and another one pond outside of the temple both of which has stone taps. This religiously significant temple is believed to have the power of silencing the enemies and the goddess Bagalamukhi is also considered as Vairabi (a type of Matrika god). It is believed that Goddess represents the knowledge whereby each thing must in time become its opposite such as she has the ability (power) of turning power into impotence, defeat into victory, speech into silence and knowledge into ignorance. Devotees visit this temple offering temple materials as Agarbatties, Paala batti, flowers, red and yellow dhojas, and many other related goods to impress the goddess and ask for their wishes. In this temple, there is a tradition of lighting three Agarbatties at once.

Moreover, in the premises of Bagalamukhi, there is the temple of Kumbeshwor Mahadev, which is the site of a fair during the festival of Janai Purnima.
