Island Peak (also known as Imja Tse) is a peak situated in Sagarmatha National Park in the eastern part of Nepal and considered as one of the best trekking as well as peak climbing destination in Khumbu region of Nepal. The peak was named as Island Peak because it appears as an island in a sea of ice when it is viewed from Dingboche (a Sherpa village in Khumbu region). This peak is actually an extension of the ridge which is coming down from the south end of Lhotse peak. The south end summit of Imja Tse was first climbed in 1953 as part of a training exercise by a British expedition that went on to summit Mount Everest by the team of members consisting of Tenzing Norgay, Charles Wylie, Alfred Gregory, Charles Evans and seven other Sherpas while the main summit of the peak was climbed by Hans-Rudolf Von Gunten and two unknown Sherpas in 1956.
Island Peak Climbing is the second busiest trekking destination (Annapurna region as first) and considered as one of the most unique trips from rich vegetation of mid hills to the arctic landscapes and climate zones. This kind of drastic temperature change is found only in the high valleys and mountains of the Khumbu area with the dramatic change in vegetation and its awesome scenery. Island Peak Climbing can be started from Lukla (2,800 meters) after a comfortable flight from Kathmandu valley. From Lukla, the trail leads to Phakding (2,652 meters), Namche Bazaar (3,440 meters), Tengboche (3,870 meters), Pheriche (4,200 meters), Lobuche (4,930 meters), Gorak Shep (5,170 meters), Kala Patthar (5,545 meters), Kongma La (5,535 meters), Chhukung (4,730 meters), Island Peak Climbing (5,200 meters), Pangboche (3,985 meters), Namche Bazaar (3,440 meters) and finally to Lukla (2,800 meters). To make this journey possible, you must be energetic as well as physically fitted with little experience in mountain expedition will be better. This trek leads through many traditional Sherpa villages that are famous as mountaineers and for providing warm hospitality at the higher altitude with porters and guides services.
However, the main highlights of trekking in Island Peak Climbing includes taking lifetime experience of trekking around Imjatse valley, exploring the high Khumbu Valley encircled with towering mountains, experiencing the ancient culture and traditions, viewing snowcapped mountains and very rare opportunity to observe some wildlife like Magnolia tree san in the trekking routes.
