Bhairav Kunda

Bhairav Kunda is a holy lake offering dramatic views of the high Himalayas situated at the altitude of 4,250 meters and is a great pilgrimage spot located towards northeast from Kathmandu valley near Tibetan border in Sindupalchowk district of Nepal. As per the meaning of the lake, Bhirav means an angry or destructive form of Lord Shiva and Kunda means Pond. This area receives thousands of visitors or pilgrims every year during the full moon in Bhadra (August), which is said to preserve the holy pilgrimage sites with unspoiled lake and beautiful landscapes all around. Beside the lake and its importance, Bhairav Kunda trek also features gorgeous mountain views, Tibetan plateaus and glaciers and discovering and experiencing different kinds of lifestyle with time and places.

Bhairav Kunda Trek can be started from Jalbire with some hours of drive from Kathmandu valley and your real trekking journey starts from here. From Jalbire (1,000 meters), you can also observe Newari culture here, the trek follows the way through Chanaute (1,350 meters), Khani Gaun (2,000 meters), Forest Camp (3,150 meters), Pati (3,765 meters) and finally to Bhairav Kunda (4,200 meters). You can also extend your trek by trekking down from Bhairav Kunda, which offers unique experience beside the trek too like experience the Buddhist villages, Sherpa houses, and terraced fields with gorgeous sunshine views. Moreover, this trek allows you to view beautiful snowcapped mountains like Madiya (6275m), Phurbi Ghhyachu (6637m), Dorje Lakpa (6966m), and Jugal Himal. This awesome journey to Bhairav Kunda passes through beautiful rhododendron forests and rural settlements. Many Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims visit this lake to take a holy bath. According to belief, they can wash away their sins by taking a holy bath here. Devotees of Lord Shiva also worship in the temple near the lake.
