Valmiki Ashram

Valmiki Ashram is a small temple or hermitage which is one of the most planned and intelligently developed tourist areas located inside Chitwan National Park of central Nepal. The name of the ashram was named after the sage Valmiki, who is said to have written epic Ramayana in this peace and beautiful spot surrounded by rolling hills in a retreat, thousands of years ago. It is said that Sitadevi was sent here to stay and it was here that Lav and Kush were born. It is also mentioned in Ramayan of Valmiki, the ashram is located on the banks of river Tamasa. These days Tamasa River flows in the form a small rivulet and is also called Purnabhadra or Tamra Bhadra.

This place can be easily reached from Kathmandu valley. From Kathmandu, it takes about 5 hours to reach there. This place can be reached either by crossing the river and then walking or directly through a vehicle by entering India border over the Gandaki barrage close by. This Ashram lies in the Chitwan National Park zone in a beautiful and well-protected jungle. Boats are available at Tribeni ghat which will take you across the river fareing about 25 rupees only. The walk from the shore to the ashram is about 20 minutes. In around the 15th of January is Surya Puja a celebration of the solar god Surya on the 1st of Magh, of the Nepali calendar, where great Mela (Fair) is organized offering circus rides, zoos, dramas, and other cultural programs receiving thousands of visitors. Devotees from both India and Nepal attended but due to the Nepal conflict is has been reduced to only a few thousand.

Besides the significant value of the Ashram, you can also enjoy wonderful jungle walk on the way to Ashram and see locals performing their religious and hygienic duties which are found to be very enjoyable and peaceful. For adding more adventure to your visit, you can also do boating in the beautiful River there capturing scenic beauty.
