Mt. Cholatse, situated at the elevation of 6,440 meters above sea level, popularly known as Jobo Lhaptshan, is a high peak in most popular Khumbu Region of Nepal. The peak was firstly summited in late 1982 through southeast ridge by Vern Clevenger, Galen Rowell, John Roskelly and Bill O’Connor. In addition, the peak was ascended solo, firstly by Ueli Steck in 2005 through north face of the peak. The name of the peak was derived from the combination of Tibetan words as, ‘Cho’ meaning lake, ‘La’ meaning pass and ‘Tse’ means peak, collectively meaning Lake Pass Peak.
However, Cholatse Peak Climbing is considered as the hardest peak to climb comparatively because of its trekking trail. Because of this fact, only a few successful ascend is made to the peak and hence requires fine mountaineering experiences with physical and mental fitness. Moreover, the peak has a narrow snow-ice ridge with steep faces lying between Khumbu and Gokyo valley which seems very beautiful and attractive. Cholatse Peak trek passes through surprising landscapes and dramatic views of beautiful Khumbu region along with mesmerizing mountain views including Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, and many other peaks. As you are trekking in the most famous mountain area, you can surely look insight into Sherpas with their culture, traditions, and lifestyles and visit old monasteries of Tengboche.
Trekking Route
As usual in Khumbu Region, your Cholatse Peak Climbing journey starts with a scenic flight to Lukla from Kathmandu valley and the actual trek towards peak starts. From Lukla, trekking trail passes through Phakding (2,800 meters), Namche Bazaar (3,440 meters), Dole (4,200 meters), Machhermo (4,450 meters), Gokyo (4,750 meters), Thagnak (4,750 meters), Zungla (4,620 meters) through Cho La Pass (5,330 meters), Cholatse Base Camp (4,590 meters) and finally to the summit of the peak at the elevation of 6,440 meters. From base camp, peak climbing journey (base camp – summit – base camp) will be completed in around 14 days. Furthermore, from base camp, trek back to Pangboche, Namche Bazaar and finally back to Lukla, from where you can easily get back to Kathmandu valley via a flight.
